Business Roundtable on China/Australia Banking and Financial Issues and Opportunities Opened in Shanghai

Business roundtable on China/Australia Banking and Financial Issues and Opportunities jointly sponsored by Melbourne APEC Finance Center and AFDC was held on April 21, 2008 in Shanghai. The Australian delegation led by Minister for Industry and Trade of State Government of Victoria Hon Theo Theophanous MLC and the Chinese delegates from the related government agencies, financial institutions and academies attended the meeting.

The roundtable centers on issues of common interest, which are: how should the Chinese and Australian financial sector adapt to the change of global economy and financial situation; how to enhance governance and risk management in the banking sector under the current economic situation; and how should China and Australia strengthen cooperation in financial services.

Both parties think that the constantly changing international economic and financial environment has brought many new challenges as well as opportunities to Chinese and Australian financial sector, especially banking sector. A stable financial system is the foundation for a healthy economy and sustainable development. Both parties think the state of Victoria and the city of Shanghai have been playing a vital role in both countries’ financial services development and the cooperation between the two parties will further promote the development of China-Australia relations.

Before the roundtable started, the Victoria delegation from Australia was met by the related officials from Shanghai municipal government and a memo of cooperation to strengthen cooperation in financial services was signed by the two sides.
