International Symposium on Financial Management/Accounting for Hospitals in China Convened at AFDC

To intensify exchanges in hospital financial management and accounting, and explore future direction for hospital accounting system reform in China, the International Symposium on Financial Management/Accounting for Hospitals in China convened on May 9, 2008 at the AFDC. The symposium was sponsored by the Ministry of Finance, China and was organized by Asia-Pacific Finance and Development Center.

Renowned Chinese and foreign experts/scholars in hospital financial management/accounting were invited to deliver presentations. The audience of more than 100 came from different backgrounds, including officials from China’s Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Health (MOH), officials from local finance and health authorities, as well as financial managers of medical institutions.

The symposium was divided into three sessions. In the first session, experts from CIMA, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Hong Kong Hospital Authority and Department of Planning and Finance, MOH, China shared their views on hospital accounting system development and reform trend. The second session focused on existing problems in financial management and accounting for hospitals in China and recommendations. In this session, participants discussed the major issues and difficulties in hospital financial management and accounting and methods, experiences and recommendations for better management of revenue, expenditure, balance and distribution of hospitals. The issue of how to reform and improve hospital accounting system by drawing on domestic and international experiences was discussed in session three.
