Distance Seminar on Basel III and Its Impact on Banking Risk Management held by AFDC
On the morning of May 13, a distance learning seminar on Basel III and Its Impact on Banking Risk Management was jointly held by the Asia-Pacific Finance and Development Center, the World Bank and Sri Lanka Distance Learning Center through videoconferencing.
Basel III was officially approved for implementation in G20 Seoul Summit last year. This seminar was designed and conducted by AFDC in response to the specific capacity building needs of Sri Lanka. More than 50 delegates from several commercial banks of Sri Lanka participated in the seminar. The seminar was chaired by Deputy Director General of AFDC Mr. Yang Jinlin in Beijing.
During the 2.5 hours, three experts were invited to address the sessions and have interactive discussions with participants on various issues concerning Basel III. Dr. Damodaran Krishnamurti, senior financial sector specialist of the World Bank, introduced to the participants the main content of Basel III and then analyzed its impact on banking risk management from Washington DC. Following that, Mr. Xu Mingqi, Deputy Director of the Institute of World Economy of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and Ms. Yvette Fernando, Director of the Bank Supervision Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, made presentations from Shanghai and Sri Lanka respectively to share the experience in implementing Basel III in their country.
