The 5th Roundatable on Labour Migration held in AFDI

The 5th Roundatable on Labour Migration, co-organized by Asia-Pacific Finance and Development Institute (AFDI), International Labour Organization (ILO), Asian Development Bank and Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), was held in Shanghai National Accounting Institute from 28th- 30th January. Dr. Peng Runzhong of AFDI and Dean Naoyuki Yoshino attended the opening session, and gave remarks. Near 60 Participants from Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Nepal, Japan and other 17 Asia-pacific economies and international organizations attend the roundatble workshop. Officials from Portugal, Isreal, Australia, and Belgium consultes in Shanghai also joined the discussion.

 

As globalization and regional integration deepen, the trend of labour migration among Asian countries also developes more and more complexity in depth and width. Chalenges are confronted to labour origin & destination countries. To meet these chalenges and better govern international labour migration, Asian countries are in imminent need for international cooperation and institution building. This roundtable offered a communication platform from participants from various background to share experience, discuss better governance model, and brainstorm for possible international regimes prospects for labour migration.

 

The roundtable were divided into several modules like “Trends and Outlook For Labour Migration, Remittances And Labour Demand In Asia In 2013-2014”, “Data Collection on Labour Migration in Asia”, “Labour Migration Infrastructure and Services”, “International Cooperation”. Experts were invited to give presentations from University of Oxford, OECD, Fudan University, Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and ASEAN Secretariat. Participants 15 Asia-Pacific economies conducted experience sharing as well as policy interpretation.
