Year of the Dragon, New Journey of Dreams - International Students’ Welcome Activities for the Year of Dragon Successfully Conducted

Lecture for International students class 2021-2023: Along With China -- Dragon Rising in China (Evolution and Development of Chinese Loong's Culture)

In the afternoon of March 1st, the Center for International Education organized a series of activities for international students of Classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023 to welcome the arrival of the new semester in the Year of Dragon.

The Chinese dragon has gone through a long process of evolution from its initial creation, from simple to complex, from abstract to figurative, from primitive to exquisite, and is the condensation and embodiment of the culture and system, aesthetics and psychology, craftsmanship and wisdom of the various ethnic groups in China. The lecture compared the images of dragons in Eastern and Western cultures by means of videos, images and samples of objects, and then presented the magnificent evolution of Chinese dragon culture with dragons in Chinese archaeological discoveries, myths and legends, decorative patterns, literature, festivals and customs, ethnic minorities as well as Shanghai's non-legacy projects, which helped international students to deeply understand the connotation of Chinese dragon culture.

Dr. Fang Yun, head of the Innovation Base of Intangible Heritage Theory and Application of Shanghai Academy of Arts and Crafts Vocational College and special scholar of the Research Center of Intangible Heritage Inheritance and Application of East China Normal University, was invited to give a speech on “Dragons Taking Off in China - The Evolution and Development of Chinese Dragon Culture.” The lecture compared the images of dragons in Eastern and Western cultures through videos, images and samples of objects, and presented the magnificent evolution of Chinese dragon culture with dragons in Chinese archaeological discoveries, myths and legends, decorative patterns, literary works, festivals and customs, ethnic minorities as well as Shanghai’s heritage projects, helping international students deeply understand the connotation of Chinese dragon culture.

After the lecture, the international students had a hands-on experience in dragon lantern making.
